Your Complete Guide to PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Everything an Indian household needs to know — eligibility, subsidy amounts, the online application steps, and the documents you must keep ready.

SECTION 01

What is the scheme?

Announced by the Government of India in 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship rooftop-solar programme aiming to bring free daytime electricity to one crore Indian homes.

Under the scheme, eligible households receive a direct bank-account subsidy when they install a grid-connected rooftop solar system, and may earn up to 300 free units of electricity every month through net metering.

The initiative is part of India's broader push toward clean energy, energy security and lower household power bills.

SECTION 02

How much subsidy will you receive?

Subsidy is paid as a direct credit to your bank account once installation and inspection are complete.

₹30,000
For 1 KW

Suited to very small homes with a low monthly bill.

₹60,000
For 2 KW

Most common slab for small Indian households.

₹78,000
For 3 KW & above

Maximum subsidy cap. Larger systems do not get extra subsidy.

Subsidy is a percentage of the system's benchmark cost — roughly 60% for the first 2 KW and 40% for the next 1 KW — capped at ₹78,000 per residential connection.

SECTION 03

Who is eligible?

  • You are an Indian resident.
  • You own a house with an unshaded rooftop suitable for solar panels.
  • You have an active electricity connection registered in your name.
  • You have not previously claimed any other government subsidy on a solar system at the same address.
SECTION 04

Step-by-step application process

The entire workflow happens through the official portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.

  1. 1

    Register on the national portal

Create your account on pmsuryaghar.gov.in by entering your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), consumer number, mobile and email.

  2. 2

    Submit the rooftop-solar application

Log in with your mobile number and consumer ID, then fill out the rooftop-solar application form with details of the system size you wish to install.

  3. 3

Wait for DISCOM technical feasibility approval

Your DISCOM will approve the request after a feasibility check. Once approved, choose any registered vendor (such as Surya Solar Hub) to install your system.

  4. 4

    Apply for the net meter

After installation, upload the system specifications on the portal and request a net meter so any surplus energy is exported back to the grid.

  5. 5

    Commissioning & subsidy disbursal

Once the net meter is installed and the DISCOM issues a commissioning certificate, upload your bank details and a cancelled cheque on the portal. The subsidy is typically credited to your bank account within about 30 days.
