What is the scheme?
Announced by the Government of India in 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship rooftop-solar programme aiming to bring free daytime electricity to one crore Indian homes.
Under the scheme, eligible households receive a direct bank-account subsidy when they install a grid-connected rooftop solar system, and may earn up to 300 free units of electricity every month through net metering.
The initiative is part of India's broader push toward clean energy, energy security and lower household power bills.
How much subsidy will you receive?
Subsidy is paid as a direct credit to your bank account once installation and inspection are complete.
Suited to very small homes with a low monthly bill.
Most common slab for small Indian households.
Maximum subsidy cap. Larger systems do not get extra subsidy.
Subsidy is a percentage of the system's benchmark cost — roughly 60% for the first 2 KW and 40% for the next 1 KW — capped at ₹78,000 per residential connection.
Who is eligible?
- You are an Indian resident.
- You own a house with an unshaded rooftop suitable for solar panels.
- You have an active electricity connection registered in your name.
- You have not previously claimed any other government subsidy on a solar system at the same address.
Step-by-step application process
The entire workflow happens through the official portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
-
1
Register on the national portal
Create your account on pmsuryaghar.gov.in by entering your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), consumer number, mobile and email.
-
2
Submit the rooftop-solar application
Log in with your mobile number and consumer ID, then fill out the rooftop-solar application form with details of the system size you wish to install.
-
3
Wait for DISCOM technical feasibility approval
Your DISCOM will approve the request after a feasibility check. Once approved, choose any registered vendor (such as Surya Solar Hub) to install your system.
-
4
Apply for the net meter
After installation, upload the system specifications on the portal and request a net meter so any surplus energy is exported back to the grid.
-
5
Commissioning & subsidy disbursal

Common questions
Is the subsidy taxable?expand_more
No. The amount credited under PM Surya Ghar Yojana is treated as a capital subsidy and is not part of your taxable income.
How long does the entire process take?expand_more
From registration to subsidy credit, the process typically takes 30 to 60 days, depending on your DISCOM's approval queues.
Can I install a system larger than 3 KW?expand_more
Yes, but the central subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 regardless of how big the system is. Larger sizes (5 KW, 10 KW or more) still make sense if your bills are high.
Do I need to maintain the panels?expand_more
Periodic cleaning and an annual performance check are recommended.customers receive free service visits over the first 2 years.
What about tenants and rented homes?expand_more
The scheme is for residential property owners. Tenants must obtain owner consent — and the subsidy is paid to the registered electricity-connection holder.
